Students Arrested for Cyber Bullying
Story dated 06 January 2005
Excuse me? Two students had competing web sites upon which they said nasty things about one another. Certainly there is a legal cause of action here -- the students could bring libel suits against one another, but instead they were content with their web sites. What gives the state the authority to use tax dollars to arrest these students who were not actively harassing each other? In all fairness, they claim that they were fearful of escalation into violence into the real world, but this is hardly cyber stalking. There was no direct electronic communication mentioned in the story. These kids were just yelling back and forth at each other from their respective fiefs -- just as I rant about stuff here on my internet fief. I'll bet the school still does nothing when actual bullies actually beat up other kids.
