TSUNAMI -- Annan defends protracted vacation, lauds US-led "core group"
Story dated 03 January 2005
When Annan is asked why he took a few days to get back from his vacation, he (rightly) made the point that modern communications make it possible for him to do his job from anywhere in the world. Now, why isn't this answer good enough for President Bush? It's nice of him to give his blessing to U.S. efforts to provide aid -- I guess he noticed that the fallout of anti-U.S. comments by Jan Egeland of Norway on behalf of the UN were caustic to the UN's public image in these United States.
