    Ron Paul for President!

Last week, Ron Paul of Texas announced his candidacy for President of the United States. I, for one, will be re-registering as a Republican so that I can vote for him in the Republican primary; and I suggest all Libertarians do the same. Here's an example of why I think he's an excellent choice:
"Ron Paul is a true American statesman," said Don Zimmerman, who ran for Texas representative in District 50 last year. "He has a long history of upholding American values, and I am happy to endorse his campaign." The presidential hopeful plans to re-establish the Constitution as the sole determinant of new legislation. "For Rep. Paul, each piece of legislation must be examined for its constitutionality. If the Constitution does not allow it, then it must be opposed," Zimmerman said.

Paul bases his campaign on a number of freedom principles, including the doctrines that the lives and actions of people are an individual's responsibility, not the government's, and that the government exists to protect liberty, not to redistribute wealth or to grant special privileges, Paul said on his Web site. Tony McDonald, chairman of the Young Conservatives of Texas, said the congressman has a good share of support among conservatives and libertarians on campus.*

We need a president who actually has read the Constitution; and Ron Paul is the guy who's actually done it.

My problem with Ron is that too often he is a Libertarian when it's convenient to Big Business for him to be a Libertarian, and a Statist when it is *not* convenient to social conservatives or Big Business for him to be a Libertarian. For example, he has stated that he would have voted for the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act", which intrudes the State into the sanctity of the marital bedroom by allowing government to define what is and is not a marriage, an act of definition which should be more properly confined to the church to which the two marital partners belong. He has also stated that he disagrees with "activist courts", i.e. courts that give people more rights than he would like them to have, despite the fact that courts can't really "give" rights (the Creator does that, courts can only prevent government from infringing upon those rights, read your Declaration of Independence again to see how our founding fathers thought about the subject). If that isn't Statist, I don't know what is. And then there is the most massive government intervention around, the government grant of "limited liability" to the owners of large corporations, thereby casting aside literally a thousand years of English common law which said that the owners of a business were responsible for the actions and debts of said business. The end result of that is owners who do not properly govern their businesses because they know government will protect them from their victims. What is Ron Paul's response to this? [Crickets]. He apparently is quite happy with this Statist intervention into the free market and natural law, because it is convenient to the wealthy and powerful who own most of America.

That said, if there were not another Western candidate in the race (Bill Richardson from New Mexico), I certainly would vote for Ron Paul over the gut-wrenchingly aweful candidates who are the current "leaders". A thrice-divorced cross-dresser from New York State? A Big Government liberal from Massachusetts? A Senator from New York State whose idol appears to be Marie Antoinette? A slick "community organizer" from Chicago who very craftily avoids actually telling any specifics of what he would do as President, instead talking in lofty languge about "ideals" and "dreams"? Gah. Gimme someone who is practical and competent and more concerned with reality than with ideology. We've had enough "big thinkers", it's time to vote for someone who keeps the roads repaired and the courts running on time, not somebody who wants to expand government into "dreams" and "ideals" that go far beyond the limits of what government should be concerned with (limits that have already been exceeded in far too many places, in my opinion). And someone who has read the Constitution. Please, someone who has read the Constitution. At least Ron Paul has done that much, one must give him credit for that, even if sometimes his rhetoric is more lofty than his actual intent.

You raise some good points, BT. Dr. Paul also doesn't really support the FairTax (although, his own language suggests that he does support it in its intended form), but this will not keep me from voting for him.

If he isn't the real thing, he is at least a clear step in the right direction.

As to your objection to LLCs, I have long been of the opinion that respondeat superior unreasonably shields irresponsible actors (e.g. employees and agents) from the full responsibility of their actions. LLCs are a heavy-handed response to this tort doctrine.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
