Tyrants of Beijing Grasp at Internet with their Iron Fist
Story dated 07 June 2005
"The Chinese authorities have ordered all weblogs and websites in the country to register with the government or face closure in Beijing's latest attempt to control online dissent . . . The government has long required all major commercial websites to register and take responsibility for internet content. At least 54 people have been jailed for posting essays or other content deemed to be subversive online." That's nice. If I lived in China, I would have probably been arrested long ago. I'm sure there are many politicians who would
love to do this in our country. Watch them. They're more dangerous to you than the Chinese tyrants at this juncture. In fact, I urge you all to take preemptive acting and write your Congress-people and tell them that this sort of thing will not be tolerated here. Don't believe it
could happen here? Think the First Amendment will protect your right to speak anonymously? You're wrong. Remember the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act? It's unconstitutional on its face. The Supreme Court did nothing. We need to chaperone our government if we wish to remain free.
"Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech."
--Benjamin Franklin
